The Queensland Lactation College (QLC) was founded in November 1995 with Lyn Crichton, Virginia Thorley and Di Smith forming the first committee.
The QLC's objectives are:
The College is an inaugural member of the Network of Australian Lactation Colleges and is an affiliate to the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA).
Monthly meetings are held in Brisbane, with a commitment to holding an Education Session following the business meeting.
Members unable to attend meetings, including those in other parts of the state, receive notes from these Education Sessions, along with the Minutes, so that they, too, can benefit.
The college's library is available to all members, including by mail.
The college holds annual half-day seminars to further its goal of providing breastfeeding education to IBCLCs, those studying for the IBLCE examination, and other interested people.
While the majority of QLC's members are IBCLCs, the college follows the practice of various other lactation consultant organisations round the world, in also accepting as members others with a commitment to breastfeeding.
The college believes membership helps to foster education and preparation for the examination.
